What we know about VW's new electric concept
The very first electric sedan in the Volkswagen family is the VW ID.Aero, and it is arriving soon in North America! The Volkswagen ID.4, an electric SUV that quickly became a huge success, is followed by the electric Aero, which is shaping up to be a promising concept!
Your VW dealer in Blainville tells you all about it, including the release date of the VW Aero in Canada.
Electric performance of the sedan: autonomy and battery
Inside the VW ID.Aero you will find a 77 kWh battery. While the German manufacturer hasn't revealed a lot about its performance, experts are predicting a power output similar to that of the ID.4.
VW will probably offer two powertrain options: the first would be a forward-wheel drive system powered by a single electric motor. As with the ID.4, its power output would be around 201 horsepower and 229 lb-ft of torque.
The second would be an all-wheel drive vehicle, this time powered by two electric motors, with one powering front and the other powering the rear. As in the SUV, this powertrain should generate a whopping 295 horsepower and 339 lb-ft of torque.
What about its total electric range?
Its autonomy has already been estimated in Europe, where it reached 620 km. The calculation according to EPA standards, which are used in North America and consider our road conditions, has not been done yet. However, we believe that the Volkswagen Aero in Canada will be able to travel about 500 km in a single charge, making it very competitive in its segment!
The reason we can draw so many parallels with the ID.4 SUV is that both vehicles are built on the same platform, the MEB. This platform was designed to distribute weight optimally and improve driving dynamics. Note that the brand plans to continue improving this platform over the next few years to deliver even better range: the goal is 600 km under EPA standards!
For now, Volkswagen's aerodynamic car boasts a sleek design that is engineered to deliver excellent performance, with a drag coefficient of 0.23 cx. More details are coming soon!
Configuration and style of the ID.AERO
Like the Passat, the Aero is expected to be very spacious and comfortable. While the interior of the Volkswagen Aero has not yet been revealed, its dimensions and large wheelbase hint at a cabin with plenty of room for all its passengers. Its dimensions are slightly larger than those of the popular Jetta, which is still offered with a gasoline engine. For more information, take a look at the Jetta and Jetta GLI. They are excellent Volkswagen sedans.
It goes without saying that we expect to see a number of new interior design elements similar to those of the ID.4. Remember that the latter is exceptionally well equipped with features and technologies. In fact, it includes, among other things:
- A 10- or 12-inch multimedia screen
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Many standard driver-assist technologies
Be sure to stay tuned for the unveiling of the first images of the interior of the new electric sedan!
The ID.AERO on our Canadian roads
The announcement of the new VW ID.Aero in Canada comes on the heels of the announcement of the final model-year of the Volkswagen Passat. In a way, the first electric sedan will take its spot as the mid-size sedan in the VW lineup.
Expected Price
It' too early to say what the price of the VW Aero will be. But because it is part of the ID family and shows some similarities with the first ID.4 SUV, some automotive experts have been speculating about versions and prices even before official data becomes available.
For example, journalists at Car and Driver have suggested the possibility of prices similar to those of the ID.4, i.e., in US dollars:
- Base: $35,000
- Pro: $42,000
- Pro S: $47,000
In Canada, the SUV is offered with a base price starting at $44,995 and rising to $49,995 CAD for the Pro version, which includes all-wheel drive. We can expect numbers in the same ballpark, possibly even lower. Will the sedan be eligible for government subsidies? So far, everything is pointing in that direction!
Release Date
The release date of the VW Aero is set for 2024, but no specific date has been given yet. However, production is scheduled to start in Europe and China in 2023.
In 2023, the German automaker will offer many new products and will also begin production of another electric Volkswagen project: the ID.Buzz.
