With its release date scheduled for late fall of 2021, the Golf GTI is making us wait just a little bit longer. Be sure to enjoy the summer season and the beautiful fall, with its vibrant colours, because the new GTI is arriving shortly afterwards and the wait will be well worth it! It’s a promise.
The design of the 2022 GTI
With its menacing look, its low and athletic stance, its oversized honeycomb grille sitting on the front bumper and flanked with 5 small fog lights on both sides, as well as its long and thin headlights that stretch along the hood, not to mention its rectangular taillights, the new 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI is sure to be a resounding success and to stand out wherever it goes. It does retain some features from its previous version, including the red stripe under the hood and its dual-tip exhaust.
The technical specs of the new Golf
Now in its 8th generation, the Golf GTI is only available in the 5-door configuration. As you would expect, the new 2022 Golf GTI is as powerful as ever, as it is equipped with the fiery 2.0 L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 241 horsepower (17 more HP than the previous generation), and 273 lb-ft of torque. The very exciting and satisfying 6-speed manual transmission is back, while also offering the remarkably efficient 7-speed DSG automatic transmission on option.
To further enhance its capabilities, the VW Golf is equipped with an electronically controlled limited-slip differential that can control torque and send it to the front wheels when necessary. The result is perfect control and stability, allowing you to take on challenging corners on the track. The suspension and chassis have also been re-calibrated, including the addition of an aluminum subframe in the front, as well as reconfigured springs and dampers for greater precision and stability.
17-inch wheels are standard, and you'll have the option to equip yours with 18- or 19-inch wheels. The Driving Dynamics Manager allows you to select different driving modes ranging from comfort to sport, allowing you to fine-tune the responsiveness, suspension, steering and stability of your GTI.

The interior and on-board equipment of the VW sedan
The interior of the new 2022 Golf GTI retains its beautiful plaid seats, but adds optional heated and ventilated perforated leather seats. A heated perforated leather steering wheel is standard for the first time ever, and the previous Fender sound system is replaced by a 480-watt Harman/Kardon system. The dashboard, doors and steering wheel are tastefully decorated with red accents, not to mention the beautiful red stitching that creates an irresistible contrast throughout the cabin.
The dashboard features a 10.25-inch instrument cluster and an 8.25- or 10-inch infotainment system. Since most of the buttons have been removed, you can control nearly every feature in your vehicle with the touchscreen. And let’s not forget the optional head-up display! Another really cool feature of the GTI is its ambient lighting, which gives you access to a selection of 30 different colours, including the GTI mode, which brings out the cabin’s sporty side.
Standard features, depending on the model, include:
- Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration
- Blind spot monitoring with rear traffic alert
- Park assist system with park distance control
- Adaptive cruise control and lane tracking
- Dynamic display of road signs
- Autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection
